Saturday (Day7) we took the Shinkansen to Sendai, about an hour and a half north of Tokyo. Because the tracks are straighter, the train has a top speed of 305 km/hr ( about 180 mph) in this area. ZOOOM!
The Sendai area was near the epicenter of the 2011 earthquake that killed about 18,000 people and generated the enormous tsunami that destroyed the Fukushima nuclear plant. Our local guide showed us several examples of where the tsunami height was noticeable.
From Sendai, we were bussed up to Matsushima. While waiting for our cruise of Matsushima Bay, we toured the entrance grounds of Zuiganji local temple. The caves were originally used for cremation ashes, but with time, they were used by monks for shelter and activities. Our cruise of Matsushima Bay was enjoyable. The bay is dotted with dozens of small islands (shima) with unusual features and many covered with pines (matsu). It has been dubbed one of the three prettiest places in Japan. Following our cruise, we had a seafood lunch at a local inn. The lunch was sooo delicious.
Following lunch we were bussed back down to Sendai for a
short visit to the ruins of Aoba Castle built in 1602 by warlord Date Masamune. Between fires and WWII allied bombing, nothing remains of the original structures, but two costumed interpreters explained some of the history.
Sunday we head north, first on bullet train and then bus, to our final destination in the Oriase area.
