Our next port of call was Puerto Quetzal Guatemala. From the port we were bussed inland to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Antigua. Dating back to the 1500's, Antigua was the capital of Guatemala for nearly 200 years. But a devastating earthquake in 1773 destroyed the city including most of its beautiful Spanish-Baroque buildings. While a number of the buildings have been restored many are still as they were after the earthquake. The Guatemalan countryside is beautiful and dotted with sugarcane and coffee plantations. There was a moderate haze over the country while we were there as this is the time of the year the sugarcane fields are burned in preparation for harvesting. As one goes through the countryside, it is clear many residents live a subsistence life, and it is no wonder they will risk all to get to the US in search of a better life.
