Bullring Market - People

As a photographer I am constantly fascinated by the diversity of facial characteristics of the people of my home city of Birmingham. These pictures are some of the People who caught my eye at the Bull Ring Market, located in the centre of Birmingham UK.

An explanation of how I made these photographs.
The vast majority of these images were made using a Canon 1DmkIIN camera. My lens of choice is Canon EF300mm f2.8 IS USM AF prime. Not only is this lens extremely sharp it also focuses very quickly. Shooting wide open at f2.8 creates diffused background making the face stand out.

These photographs have not been posed, nor have I asked permission to photograph the subjects. If I had the results would not be as they are here. Once a person knows they are being photographed their expressions change. What first drew me to the subject disappears. If I am shooting full face head on and I make eye contact with the subject. I will explain why I have just photographed them and hopefully dispel their fears. I give the person my card which has my web site address printed on them. I ask them to look at my work and then make a judgement.

These are among the finest portraits of humanity I have ever seen. There's something almost painfully beautiful about them. Each one deserving to be hung in a gallery and thoughtfully contemplated. But they are sad and I know that there is more to humanity than this aching emptiness you have captured so evocatively. I'm a photographer becoming and am both inspired and disquieted by these touching portraits of yours.

I am in the process of making a documentary, thank you for helping me. Your portraits are real - which is something in the ordinary world, yet out of ordinary because so many photos people see today are posed. Maybe thats why so many people are fake.

Goodness, it has been 25 years since I was in my hometown of Brum, if your photographs are representitive of those who now walk the city centre it has certainly changed a great deal. Thank you for bringing it home to me, I would certainly find it an interesting experience to return to the city I grew up in,

I noticed that some of your subjects actually looked at you when you were taking photos of them. I had the same experience. Just as you did, I always give them a smile. In most cases, they would understand after my explanation or showing the previous photos I took. Thank you again for you to share these wonderful portraits with us.

Do you ever get any grief from any of these people when they catch you? You give them your card but the homeless don't have internet access and I have had people be upset at me in the past. Most are OK but even with a 300 some people get upset when a camera is pointed at them. Great pictures by the way.

Being someone who loves to shoot candid photography myself, there is no way I could not love this gallery. Of course a 300mm f/2.8 prime will take a great a photo but without a good eye and sense of timing the best equipment in the world will still only give you a snapshot. Do to the high speed shooting, this entire gallery probably encompasses less than 1/500th of a second combined. And a fascinating 1/500th of a second it is. I hope it makes it to number one on the pop chart. You have earned my vote and I rarely click the vote button.

Intresting photos I have allways be afraid of using so high ISO values as you do. But you are using 300 mm zoom and fast shutter speed. Seems to workout fine in black and white. I was going from photo to photo, carefully looking at face after face, trying to understand what is so special, so different in this collection of faces. And than I realized that all those portraits are taken on the boarder of focus, like on the boarder of face and soul. I found this gallery not only great research of diversity of characters, but also highly spiritual collection. Enjoyed my time with people of Birmingham, thank you, Photographer!

How do you do these stunning pictures? With close ups like this even with a 300 mm must mean you are only about 3 - 4 meters away. From the expressions it seems obvious you have not asked in advance if you can take your pictures.... how do most people react? Do you ever cause any bad feelings? How do you handle it?
