4/4: New Lens

I rented an 85mm 1.8 today for a shoot tomorrow morning. I took a couple test shots of my daughter this evening to get a feel for it. Two test photos and I feel compelled to buy this lens ASAP.

Very nice. I like the way the shadow falls across her face. She's very pretty.

I love this photograph. The composition is exceptional and the tones are very pleasing to the eye. I really think that you hit the nail right on with this one. Voting.

Nice image. Fast lenses are great.

She really is a great subject. There is something about her that seems to present well in black and white.
I'm shopping a cheap alternative to the Canon 85mm. Something screw mount most likely, just not sure what. It fills a wonderful niche.

The light is wonderful and the B&W superb.

Great shot! Comp, shadows and lighting are wonderful. Color treatment is good, too. I love this composition.

Oh, I forgot to say how perfect the light is.

Wow! Beautiful portraits. The B&W is excellent. I really like her direct gaze.

I'm of Lee's opinion. Sometimes I don't take the 85 off my camera. Excellent portrait lens, it's also great in a crummy poorly lit gym(basketball etc). It's good for all around mid lengths. It's an awesome lens that captures every nuance (ie, facial blemish)

I'm sure you could shoot here through the bottom of a milk bottle and A) you'd get a great shot and B) you'd have a great subject. Vote

Beautiful light play. I love this. Buy the 85mm, it's a great lens, I think you'd really enjoy it with the type of stuff you do!
Guest 05-Apr-2005 04:28
I can see why, you wield it so well. The 85mm is a perfect portrait lens, have fun with it.

85mm f/1.8... nice. :) i don't have a Canon, but my Nikon equivalent is pretty sweet, very sharp. be very careful with the narrow dof though! generally speaking, i'd avoid going below f/2.8 until you've had enough time experimenting with the lens, or if you are shooting indoors/low-light and have no choice.

nice portrait as well. i actually prefer the second one though. i think the angle and how the shadow is cast works better in the other shot. in the other shot, you get the impression of someone peering out at you. in this first shot, the shadow is casted over one eye and misses her lips, so i'm not too sure what message it conveys.

Great portrait. Very 'California' in some ways. Wonderful Black and White tones, ala Ansel and a beautiful Cali-girl, blonde and sun-freckled. Great stuff, Jeremy. Agree, btw. Buy that lens :)

Nice portrait. 85mm 1.8 is a very good portrait lens.
Guest 05-Apr-2005 03:50
Really nice! This is making me reconsider what my next lens will be... ;)
Donna Lear05-Apr-2005 03:15
Beautiful shot, perfect in b&w. I am now chanting quietly to myself, "No.. you already have two lenses .. two lenses .. you don't need another one right now."
David Winge05-Apr-2005 03:07
Beautiful!!!
Guest 05-Apr-2005 03:04
Wow, who did you rent from ?
Rochelle Weiss05-Apr-2005 02:52
Beautiful shots. Ditto the others, man. I had been able to talk myself out of the 14 mm wide angle and the 80-400 VR zoom, but when I see what good lenses can do, I'm having a hard time not pulling out the charge card.
Ray Akey05-Apr-2005 02:49
Very nice Jeremy. I like the alternate photo you posted as is shows more of the environment, for mood enhancement.
snootydog05-Apr-2005 02:38
Oh please don't post photos like this that encourage lens temptation! This is a ringing endorsement for the 85mm. Just an outstanding image.
jude05-Apr-2005 02:31
Ohhhhhhh... oooooooohhhh.. Sheesh.. not another lens I might want! sigh
Excellent photos.. love the DOF on them... the b&w works really well here
