The giant pandas are considered a national treasure of China, and Sichuan Province is home to 85 per cent of the slightly more than 1,000 giant pandas left in the world. The province has 17 of the 19 giant panda nature reserves in China, of which the Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve, located 136 kilometres from Chengdu, is the largest.
