Changing Of The Guards, Martyr's Shrine, Taipei (May-Jun 06)

The KMT government dedicated this complex, built in the palace style of the Ming Dynasty, to the fallen heroes of China's wars and named it the Martyrs' Shrine (Chunglie Tzu). The names of the heroes are inscribed beside murals depicting their feats inside the main building past two gigantic brass-studded doors. The clockwork changing of the guard on the hour every day as shown in the picture is as much an attraction for visitors as the shrine itself. The arched portals of the main gate structure which open onto a vast courtyard leading to the halls/pavilions of the complex, are shown reflected in the polished helmet of the guard in the picture.
