This is the Kleine Scheidegg railway station, on our train journey from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch - "Top of Europe". At this station, everybody must disembark and change to a special train for the remaining journey to Jungfraujoch, a steep climb of 12 kilometres almost all of which is through tunnel hewn out of the Alpine rock. Stops are made at the Eiger North Wall, Eiger Glacier and Sea of Ice stations, where huge observation windows offer breathtaking vistas of the glaciers and mountains as well as valleys below.
Upon reaching Jungfraujoch itself, visitors are offered fine views of the Aletsh Glacier, which at 24 kilometres is the longest ice stream in the Alps. Another popular attraction is the Ice Palace, created in the 1930s 20 metres under the Aletsch Glacier, and contains displays of superb sculptures of wildlife and other impressive exhibits, all carved out of solid, natural ice.
Another attraction recently added is the Sphinx Observation Building, which opened in 1996 after three years' of construction work under the most extreme climatic conditions. The glass and steel structure provides a 360-degree panarama of the surrounding Alphine scenery of breathtaking beauty.
More than half a million visitors visit Jungfraujoch annually, and for many it is the most memorable highlight of their visit to Switzerland.
