This is an example of old growth forest canopy at the base area. Each major trunk is actually comprised of many trees having grown together to form one gigantic tree. Early in this scenario, the trees in the outer areas decide to morph themselves into the swirley outer roots, providing a sort of "A" frame support structure. Again, with the shallow root systems here, this proves a strong method of supporting the tremendous upper growth for hundreds of years. This is not a good candidate for lumber.
