The Aussie red back spider is virtually identical to the American black widow, except the red back has a distinctive red stripe running along the top of the abdomen. I have seen some which also have a small red hourglass marking on the underside, just like the black widow. This nasty specimen was the one under my patio chair that took issue with my leg.
