More Amateur photographer - POTY Flowers round
First time ever that I've been in the same magazine two weeks in a row! This week my 'yellow flower with water drop' photo was printed in 28th place in the Flowers and Plants round of the Amateur photographer POTY. I may have left it a bit late to get to the top of the league table though, I am about 120 points behind....

Amateur Photographer Magazine - Gardens Masterclass
I was invited by Amateur Photographer Magazine to take part in a Gardens Masterclass led by Clive Nichols last month. After a burning hot week I drove down to RHS Rosemoor Gardens in Devon to wake up to a grey dull day. The threatened rain never arrived, but the sky was not an attractive part of any of our shots. We concentrated instead on filling the shot with colour from the flowers, visiting various parts of the gardens for inspiration. At the end of the day we were asked to choose our 10 best photographs - out of those where we had been following the theme, so my bluebottle was not allowed! Then finally in this weeks magazine (14 Aug) Gemma has written about our day and I was pleased to see three of my shots in print.

Fishguard Folk festival 2010
Another sucessful
Fishguard Folk Festival. I took lots of photos of musical people - see the
Fishguard 2010 album. This time I even got a little musical myself and learned to make music, at at least a kind of warbling wailing note, from a saw and bow at Lucy and Jonny's saw workshop.

Practical Photography POTY final - 2nd place
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: I got out my favourite macro lens and mulled over the theme. What’s a good creepy crawly? It’s got to be a butterfly. Chasing their flitting colourful wings at the
Future Gardens Butterfly World Project I came across these tiny evil looking caterpillars destroying a red flowered passion vine. Eating this apparently makes them taste as bad as they look! And finally the ugly - the chrysalis looks dry and dead with horns and strange metallic patches, while inside a transformation occurs. Together my images show the three stage life of the Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charithonia) from a munching caterpillar, through an ugly chrysalis to a beautiful butterfly.
The results will be printed in the December 2009 issue of Practical Photography.

Practical photography POTY 2009 competition - Stage 2 success!
I just got a letter to say that I am one of six photographers in the final of Practical photography magazine's Photographer of the Year competition! I had tried to shoot a new photograph for stage 2, but it in the end one of my old favourites seemed a better choice.
"Using my new photographic spotlight and stand (aka super bright bike lights and sticky tape), I created a corridor of light in the otherwise dark garden.
With my most enthusiastic model (me), I experimented with lots of different movements. One of the fun things about making this kind of image is the unpredictability of the results – even an attempted repeat is never quite the same.
In the chosen shot I walked towards the light to make a trail then froze for the sharp section. The spotlight picked me out against the dark background, with some scattering of light showing leaves in my trail."

Fishguard Folk festival 2009
I was delighted to be invited to be an "offical festival photographer" at this year's

Fishguard album.
I also provided photographs from this event for the websites of some performers -
Raise the Dust and Mike Chant's soon to be
new website.
