Porcupine Rim

The Porcupine Rim Trail is the "other" famous ride at Moab. For the 98% of people who shuttle to the trailhead this trail is a 16 mile ride, requiring expert technical skills, and is recommended for advanced bikers who are in good shape. For the truly insane (that's me) ... this ride can be ridden as a 34 mile loop that includes a 10 mile climb that gains over 4000' in elevation. To make matters even worse, I rode the entire loop on a day with wind gusts reaching 30mph and 2" of snow on half the trail! This trail has it all … rugged Jeep trails, incredible rock formations, panoramic views, and, near the end of the loop, a fast single-track descent to the Colorado River. All the views along the rim are spectacular, but the most stunning view is from High Anxiety Viewpoint. From this viewpoint I was able to stand on a rock ledge extending off the Rim and admire Castle Valley 1,500 feet below. The La Sal Mountains dominated the skyline to the east, fantastic rock towers called the Priest and Nuns loomed to the northeast, and the Colorado River Gorge winded by to the northwest.
