This is just a drill...
In the world of medicine, there are tons of tests and exams. During school, one has the usually tests. Then there was the creation of the "standardized patient", which only meant that there was another way to evaluate a student physician. The federal government gets into the picture with licensing exams...all 3 steps of them spread over 3 years. After that is done, they say you are qualified to practice medicine except for your specialty board certification exams (usually there are written and oral components). If you decide to sub-specialized, there's another test thrown into the soup. Once you are finished, it is a matter of just waiting until it is time to recertify...yup, more tests. I guess day-to-day life is not enough since someone can't charge you a testing fee for that.
Today, I took my re-certification for BLS (basic life support) a.k.a. CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation). As the name implies, it is one of the most basic skills that we are required to have.
In day-to-day life, it is probably the most important.
The skills learned in a CPR class may be those that will make the difference between survival of another person, possibly a loved-one. Training in CPR is also the skill-set that is available to everyone, not just healthcare providers.
This re-fresher course was 4 hours out of my life...4 hours very well spent. Skills that I hope that I will never need again, but thankful that I have.
