Scallions...green onions...yummy.
I grew up with scallions as a staple. They were usually found in stir-fry dishes my mom conjured up with skill and mastery. I then discovered that they could be enjoyed raw...thinly chopped and scattered over the top of J.B. Winberie's chilli.
Anyway, I was greeted by this sight as I entered my parents' home today. These scallions were sitting on the floor, on top of some Chinese newspapers. I reached back into the recesses of my memory to see if placing the scallions on newspaper in the middle of the kitchen floor was some kind of custom or tradition. I tried hard but to no avail.
I then decided to just be happy that these stalks of scallions would soon be part of a delicious meal. Now, that I remember from childhood!
