Killdeer in road

Worcester, MA, USA

This Killdeer was sitting in the middle of a little-used road in a cemetery where I often go birding. It looked so puffed up that I thought it was either sick or had been hit by a car. As it turned out, it was a cool day but the road was warm from the sun. The puffed-up look was because there were two chicks keeping warm under mom (or dad?) They emerged a while later after I had passed by. I was glad not to have disturbed them.

This species picks very odd places to lay their eggs and raise their young. I'm surprised you didn't get the 'broken wing' impersonation to lead you away from the chicks.
