VLL AAA Mariners @ Phillies - April 11, 2015, Cervenak Field Glyndon Park
Beautiful day at the new Cervenak Field! This was a close game most of the way, with lots of hits and good plays. We led pretty much the entire game, however the Phillies kept it close, were the home team and last to bat. The Phils had a few more hits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 6th, resulting in a close loss, 10-9. There were a good number of errors by both teams, and a few questionable calls, all to be expected in the first game of the season. The team looks very good, though!
From Coach Tim:
"What a great day to start the season. Beautiful weather, great new field, and the boys played a good 3A game to kick it all off. I am really proud of how the boys hit the ball today and were aggressive in each of their at bats. We had 10 hits today and only one or two was a dribbler. We hit the ball hard and square. Even a few or our outs were firmly struck. Our pitchers were under control throwing strikes all day and challenging the Phillies in every at bat. We had only 3 walks today - An amazing feat during my time in little league baseball. This also lead to a complete game, which does not come often in the minor leagues. Other than Michaels 17 pitch 12 minute at bat to lead things off, the game had great flow. We ran the bases well, stealing in the right moments and staying active on passed balls and errors. Unfortunately we do have work on our defense and situational circumstances, but this is to be expected. The weather has not allowed us many full field practices to ourselves. Additionally a number of the boys are new to 3A, the speed of the game and the slight rule changes that allow for more aggressive base running. All in all though this game was a great way to start the season, provide perspective for all and the hunger to get better, which we will. Thanks for all the cheering and support!"
