Monday, June 23: Saluzzo (50k)
We biked a fairly short loop ride today. It was very hot, so we stopped at a grocery store in SanFront after only about 25k to buy Gatorade before riding the additional 13k to Paesana. We could have kept going uphill another 20k or so, but decided to take it easy and let our bodies get over the jet lag. We rode back through SanFront, then rode north to Revello, where we had lunch (panini) with Thomas and Mary at the Caffe del Centro in Revello. The area around Saluzzo is heavily agricultural, so we passed corn and wheat fields that were composted with manure--fragrant! The last leg of our ride involved a stretch up the autostrada to see the abbey at Staffarda, and then a hot slog back into Saluzzo.
We were back at the hotel by 2:15, showered, and then wandered around old Saluzzo taking pictures (and eating limone gelato) before dinner. Dinner was on our own, so we ate at Le Quattro stagioni d'Italia: hors d'oevres of raw beef with arugula and swordfish with olive paste and lemon; risotto with shrimp; a huge salad for Carolyn; and beef with tomatoes for Jeff, all with a Gaya 1998 Rossj Bass Langhe.
Jeff had problems with his GPS unit today, so no digital map or altitude profile, but check the rest of the days!
