Pavel Tretyakov (1832-1898) commissioned and collected art reflecting Russian life throughout the ages, then gave his gallery to the state for a public museum. Treasures include outstanding works by Andrei Rubilov, Ilya Repin, and Ivan Awasowski. The present facade and Tretyakov's statue were added in 1902.
