Ita, Shizuoka, Japan

Also known as Flying Fishes, Grunt Fishes and Japanese Sea Robin.

Found singly on sand and rubble bottoms, juveniles shallow, often partly buried in sand in bays and lagoons, adults much deeper waters and rarely seen.
They feed on small fish, bivalves and crustaceans.
Length - 20cm
Depth - 40-115m

The pelvic fins act like legs as the fish walks along the bottom of the ocean. They also grunt or make chirping noises by expelling gas from their bladders. French term for the word Gurnard means to grunt.

Spectacular color! It resembles the scorpion fish in the Caribbean, but much prettier. V
