Columbia Gorge Falls, Sahalie Falls, and Hackelman Old Growth Grove, Oregon, Oct 17-19, 2020
In the past, I have shot waterfalls with my Nikon D500. I wanted to try using my ND4 Neutral Density filter with my Sony RX10 M4 to shoot waterfalls, so I first went to the nearby Columbia Gorge to try a few and then a few days later we went down to Sahalie Falls. We had never been to Sahalie Falls before, and the weather called for overcast/cloudy sky which is great for photographing waterfalls. Unfortunately, access to nearby Koosah Falls was closed as they were replacing the railing at the viewpoint, but Sahalie (the taller waterfall) was still accessible. It was also sunny instead of cloudy, but Sahalie was still great to see. We actually stopped there in the morning, and then after eating a picnic lunch near Clear Lake Resort, we went back again. It was still sunny, but now the sun was at an angle that provided a rainbow in the spray from the falls! To get to Sahalie Falls, it is 66 miles East of I-5 on Hwy 20 (almost to its intersection with Hwy 22), and then about 5.5 miles South on Hwy 126. There is a turnoff there with parking and the viewpoint is only about 30 yards from the parking lot.
We didn't even know Hackelman Old Growth Grove place existed! As we were driving along Hwy 20 on our way to Sahalie Falls, we saw the sign for this. So after going to the falls, we came back this way and took the trail here. It says it is 1/4 mile, but at best that is one way, as we believe it is a bit over 1/2 mile round trip. That is still not very far, but is is not just 1/4 mile. Ignoring that, the trail can be fully handicap accessible, or you can take a narrower trail coming back. It is also well worth the trip! Note 4 pf the images were taken near where we parked by Clear Lake Resort for a picnic.
BTW: Since ISO 64 is the lowest my Sony RX10 M4 goes to, I have since bought an ND8 Neutral Density filter so that if it is sunny out it gives me a few more exposure options.
