Matanuska Glacier and Kenai Peninsula, Alaska - September 2015
This is part of a one week trip to Alaska. We flew into Anchorage, rented a car and drove to Sheep Mountain Lodge (a great place to stay) so that we could take a guided hike with MICA Guides to the Ice Falls on Matanuska Glacier. We had walked on the snout area a number of years ago on our own, but we wanted to go further (safely) and see more, so went with MICA Guides. We were very happy with them and if we get to that area again we will use them again for a longer trek. We then drove down to the Kenai Peninsula, stopping at Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, and then on to Soldotna. From there we were to fly the next morning on Natron Air to Silver Salmon Creek Lodge in Lake Clark National Park. Unfortunately, we got about three fourths there, and ran into a huge fog bank so had to turn back. Disappointed, but definitely agreed that the pilot made the right choice. We waited around their office until about 1 PM, but since the lodge and other pilots reported no improvement, we were out of luck for the day. We hiked a little over 3 miles around the nearby Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, so at least enjoyed that. We had planned 3 nights in Lake Clark National Park, but were now reduced to 2 nights. Fortunately, weather was better the next morning. This gallery will just cover the Matanuska and Kenai areas, and I have created a second gallery for the Lake Clark portion of the trip (lots of bear photos).
