These very contorted trees are Whitebark Pines. They are a high-elevation tree that is under extreme pressure from White pine blister rust (nonnative fungus) and Mountain Pine Beetle. Between these and recent droughts, they have been classified as endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Much more info on them is available at https://whitebarkfound.org, the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation.
