Great example of a "Nurse Stump". Here, a seedling sprouted on top of a rotting stump, and eventually sent roots down along the sides to reach the ground. Also notice the dark rectangular area near the center top of the stump. This was a notch cut into the tree to place a "springboard" for the loggers to stand on while cutting down the tree.
