Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

A Kiva. The hole at top-center is one of several that allow cool air come down to feed the central fire. To avoid the cool blasting straight into the fire, they always have a deflector wall to cause the air to flow around before going into the central fire. The Kiva would have been topped with a thatched roof, with a ladder coming through a hole in the middle (over the fire).
