This image shows an Organ Pipe Cactus in front, and a Saguaro to the left behind it. As you can see the Organ Pipe Cactus primarily branches at its base, but if you will look close can also branch from its columns like the Saguaro does. The multiple columns from the base is the primary obvious distinction.
