After stopping at Palouse Falls and a friend’s house on the way, we spent 3 nights at an RV park just outside of West Glacier. After setting up our trailer and having something to eat, we headed into the park to take the Trail of the Cedars to Avalanche Creek and Gorge. There, we took photos both from the small bridge that crosses the creek as well as a little further up the trail as it parallels the gorge. The next morning we got up early to get to Logan Pass by 8:20 AM. Even at that hour, the parking lot there was already almost full and was more than full by the time we ate our breakfast there in the car and got our stuff ready for hiking Highline Trail. This is our favorite trail in the park. It is usually good for both wildlife and wildflowers. The flowers were spectacular this time, and it was a bumper year for Bear Grass as we had never seen so much in bloom at once. At about 3.5 miles in, there were Plenty of Hoary Marmots and Columbian ground squirrel at the Lunch Rocks below Haystack Butte which was both our lunch stop and turnaround point. On the way back more flowers were now in the sun and about 2/3 of the way back we ran into a mother and kid Mountain Goat on the trail. We backed up some to give them room, while still being able to get plenty of shots before they left the trail. Then, just before getting back to Logan Pass, we saw a group of 5 Bighorn Sheep initially about 50 yards away and took photos as they moved on to some small cliffs about 100 yards away. The next morning we stopped at the turnoff just West of Logan Pass. This has always been a great place to see Mountain Goats and it did not disappoint. Got lots of shots of a goat there, then drove over to the East side of the park and did a short hike to Fishercap Lake on Swiftcurrent Trail. After that we had planned on stopping at Sunrift Gorge, Baring Falls, as well as St. Mary and Virginia Falls. However, even after making several passes, there was no parking available at all. Likewise at Logan Pass, the turnout we had used in the morning, and even the parking area for Trail of the Cedars. The park is just so crowded in the summer that we will probably restrict our future trips to the Fall, or if we do come in the Summer, plan on using the shuttles!
