The second day of our trip was supposed to be mainly a glacier cruise from Seward of tidewater glaciers in Kenai Fjords National Park. However the weather was still a problem as the winds out of the South were generating 9 foot waves, and growing, at the time we went to check in for the cruise, so it was cancelled. Instead we spent more time at Exit Glacier, just outside of Seward. You drive up to a parking lot about a half mile from the glacier and hike up to it. The rest of the day we spent driving all the way around to Homer, as far South as you can drive, on the other side of the Kenai peninsula. The following day we drove to Copper Center, near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and stopped at Matanuska Glacier along the way. Matanuska Glacier is about midway between Palmer and Glennallen. Do note that the State Recreation area give you a view of it from the road, but you are still a long way from it. To really see it you turn in, just East of the State Recreation area, and have to pay a private landowner $10 per adult (less for children, but I don't remember the rates) and sign a form releasing them from any liability incase you fall or get hurt in any way on the glacier. I think it is a shame to have to pay for access like this, however the glacier is really worth it! You get to drive to a parking area right at the edge of the glacier and hike out onto it. Once you do it is like you have entered a different world. There are lots of little melt water streams on the top of the glacier, along with lots of rocks and debris that the glacier has carried down from the mountains. Well, I think this is more than enough info, so, enjoy the photos!
You are not only superb photographers, but you are the most daring and adventurous people I know! Thanks for the continuing travelogue, and no wonder you want to get the hell out of the desert.
