Today, Holly (one of the other members of the Puma Tour) and I, spent a day in Santiago, prior to our flight to Puerto Arenas the next morning. Basically, we took an Uber toward the center of town, planning on going to the top of the tallest building in Santiago, the Gran Torre Santiago. It is a 64-story skyscraper 300 meters tall, with an observation area near the top. Unfortunately, the top was clouded in, so we didn’t go up. At the base of the tower is a large shopping and eating area. We had lunch at the Hard Rock Café there. We then got on a Hop-on-off buss to go to San Cristobal Hill. It is 880 meters high and about 300 meters above the rest of Santiago. While it was also shrouded in clouds, we took a Funicular (cog-wheel-train) to the top of the hill. At the top is the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception featuring a 14-meter statue of the Virgin Mary, which stands on a 8.3-meter-high pedestal. There is also a small sanctuary there where Pope John Paul II prayed in 1987. After taking the Funicular back to its base, we hopped back aboard the tour bus and went to the city center. There we saw a large post office and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, on the Plaza de Armas. From there, we took Uber back to the hotel.
