A precursor to the Northrop-Grumman B-2 "stealth bomber," the Northrop N1M Flying Wing was designed in 1939. The first flight tests were conducted in July 1940. During 1940 and 1941, over 200 flights were made in this aircraft to gather further data. Control of the aircraft was achieved through the use of a system of elevons and wing tip rudders. The elevons served in tailless type aircraft both as elevators and ailerons. Rudder action was provided by control surfaces incorporated in the drooping wing tips.
