Prison Cell

Moundsville, West Virginia

The claustrophobic feeling 5 x 7-foot cells once housed three prisoners, two in bunks and one on the floor. In 1982, a West Virginia judge ruled the conditions of the prison, particularly the 5-by-7 cells, constituted cruel and unusual punishment. It would take many years and more legal proceedings before the Penitentiary was eventually closed in 1995.
