May 8: the Other Side of the Coin

North Providence, RI

We're taught that the odds of a coin toss are 50-50, heads or tales. But this isn't precisely the case. The odds of a 2 Pence coin landing on its edge have been estimated at 1 in 2,000 or less probable. But when you think of all of the people "flipping the coin" every day around the world, the total number of side landings must be quite high. Next time you aren't sure about a decision, try flipping a coin. The outcomes can be strange and wonderful.

I think I see a gap in the market for coins with chamfered edges - a sure way to make money ;-)

John, I heard about someone who's actually seen it.
Actually a group of someones at a university, whose mathematics professor was demonstrating probabilities. When it landed on its side it caused his curriculum to change slightly. This is not thought to be a universal unintended consequence of side landings.

I have never seen a coin land on its edge.
Has anybody actually seen it, rather than hear about it.
