ticket to tour

QE2

In 1985, when I was 12 years old, I wrote to the president of Cunard (Ralph Bahna at the time) and asked for a tour of the QE2. I told him of my virtual obsession with ocean liners, and apparently he'd had the same affliction starting young and was moved. My mother trekked me from Chicago to New York, where we met my grandmother, and the three of us spent the day on and around the QE2.

The result was many of the photos in this gallery, and some really cool memories.

I had one of those Boarding Permits as well. Mine was issued by Tom Luby, Landing Agent for Cunard. Mine was issued to me after her third trip to New York in 1969. I was stationed in New York in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the 110' tug MANITOU. We brought the boarding parties (Customs, Public Health, & Company Officials) out to the incoming liners. We were part of QE-2's Maiden Voyage welcoming flotilla. On her second trip to New York, I met Mr. Luby, and he granted me permission to be able to board the ship on the next trip in two weeks, which was her third. On that trip, he gave me the pass, and from there forward, I boarded the ship at the pier in New York, like I was a company official. I was only asked once for the pass to be shown by someone on the pier. Can't do that today. You can't even get near the ships. Too Bad, that 9/11 had to ruin a lot of good things for all of us.
