Ash from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, collected by family friends who lived in the area. Over the years it's shrunk to almost half its original volume, I suspect because it is so fine it's constantly compacting.
Coincidently, as I type this "Dante's Peak" is on the tv in the background. Coincidence? I think not.
