Construction began in 1347 under Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, to replace the Judith Bridge of 1172 after it collapsed in a flood. Today as a pedestrian-only bridge it is the prime gathering place for tourists and those who want to do business with them.
The statues that seem a trademark of the bridge didn't begin to appear until the 17th century.
