NY Governor, Senator, Secretary of State and architect of the U.S. purchase of Alaska.
At the south end of Madison Square Park, at Broadway and 5th Avenue.
He was Secretary of State under Lincoln. The Lincoln assassination was part of a larger attempt to decapitate the Northern (Federal) government. That night, Lewis Powell's attempt on Seward's life failed. George Atzerodt went to a bar and drank instead of carrying out his mission, an attack on Vice President Andrew Johnson.
Ironically, self-styled Southern patriot John Wilkes Booth managed to kill practically the only man in the North who advocated treating the former Confederate states fairly.
