black helicopters

North Providence, RI

To the crew: I finally have two high-res photos, including this one, uploaded here: http://www.pbase.com/jason_daniel_anderson/gallery/n741sf, as of 7/20. I have a few more good shots, and will post them asap!

N741SF is a McDonnell Douglas 500E (though its registration says it's a 369E), built in 1988. Registered to Aerial Resources, LLC in Chesapeake, VA, doing business as Chesapeake Helicopters and CBH Imaging Resources out of Hampton Roads Executive airport (KPVG).

The pilot hovered for a few minutes over several spots down the length of Canada Pond, while the passenger wrote furiously on his pad or notebook. They made two separate runs. Assuming he was at the midpoint of the pond, that would put him about 250 feet from my window. Helicopters are quite loud at distances of much more than 250 feet. (I'm just saying).

High Guys. After Googling the tail number of this aircraft today, I found your page. Today, I caught three images of this 500E working on high voltage lines in Norfolk, VA on route 264 around 4:30pm 9-20-10. Image quality is okay, considering it was through a windsheild in stopped traffic. That aircraft gets a lot of atteention. The rubber-neckers took traffic from 60mph down to 25mph in order to get a glimpse.

Yea, sure...I think the cats are growing more than catnip out back! Maybe they know these folks..

Gee Jason, this is your second run in with helicoptors, what are you growing in your garden? :)

I would just like to point out I was neither the pilot, nor the observer, nor the passenger, and I know nothing about this flight, or any other.
I hope that makes the situation clear to all concerned.

To the pilot and observer:
Thanks for your comments -- and please realize the noise complaints are mainly a little comic relief :o) I'd be more than happy to provide high-res images. I have a few decent shots, so let me process them and I'll post them in a gallery. I'll post the link under this photo -- but you can also leave me a private message with your email address (just click "private comment" by the message box), or email me at jasondaniel@cox.net, if you want me to let you know when they're up. Thanks for the photo op!

ps, very nice hovering, you looked rock steady from the ground.

I'm the observer "furiously writing" in your photo. That's a great shot. Sorry about the noise, lol.
Pilot 14-Jul-2009 01:21
I’m the pilot in this photo. We were doing a powerline inspection for National Grid on the transmission lines that run parallel with the lake. Yes it is 500E from McDonnell Douglas; however the FAA uses 369E designation. Sorry about the noise, we try to be a quick as possible so that we do not to upset the public. This picture is very nice. If at all possible, I would like to have a hi-res version for my personal use.

Great shot, Jason. Now, if he wanted a real record of what he saw surely he should have borrowed your camera and lens? :)
