When new in 1984 she and her sister Noordam were the modern ships in Holland America's fleet, joining the venerable flagship Rotterdam. As numerous mega-ships joined the fleet, all three ships were sold. Nieuw Amsterdam became Patriot for United States Lines Cruises in 2000, but the line shut down in late 2001. She now sails as Thomson Spirit for Thomson Cruises.
