Since reed/cane doesn't grow 300 feet tall, they bundle it in various lengths from a few feet to probably about 14 feet or so (just guessing, didn't measure it). You want it to be a constant strand though, so you join the end of the wrapped piece with the end of a new piece. Staples were suggested and worked well. Always do your joins on the underside (cut your pieces shorter if the end wraps back around to the top). It was advised to staple with the prongs up, so either staple upside down or twist the reed over and staple into the "finish" side of it. Use a clamp to hold the loose ends in place while you work on the join.
