First Brew

My buddy Randall came over and helped sail Brewflex on her maiden voyage. We were pretty busy getting a system worked out, so I wound up with only three pics, but all in all it was a good day. We uncovered a couple of things that need to be improved upon... I didn't think the sight glass design through very well. I held the glass in place with a small piece of hose to the copper elbow. It had enough spring in it that it lessened my fears of it breaking, but I didn't consider the heat. The first two kettles did fine, but when we got to the boil kettle, the hose holding the pieces together couldn't stand up to the heat and the sight glass wound up falling over on its own and crashing to the floor. Unfortunately, that made an opening at the bottom of a boiling kettle. We lost about a gallon's worth of liquid before getting it plugged. I've ordered some high-temp, reinforced silicon hose and some aluminum pipe that I'm going to slide over that to help reinforce it. Also getting some more valves to install there to stop future spills. I also still need to work on the heat transfer system for the mash process. I had bought the little trash can thingy shown in the other pics, but I wound up not being able to coil the 1/2" copper small enough to fit inside. Wound up with a seperate burner this time around and tried to manually keep it at 150 degrees that way. Stayed pretty close, but I think the little controller will do a better job once I rig up a big enough tank for the coil.
