Rugby World Cup - 2011

As part of the Rugby World Cup 2011 opening ceremony, a fleet of more than 20 waka /Maori Canoes arrived en mass at the Auckland Viaduct to coincide with opening celebrations.
The waka, which were manned by more than 600 warriors from all over New Zealand, passed under the pedestrian overbridge that connects Wynyard Quarter with the Viaduct before coming in to berth.
The fleet is followed by sailing waka, Te Aurere, which carried 20 children dressed in the colours of competing nations.
Dave Dobbyn and band sang ‘Welcome Home’ as the last waka was called in by a Ngati Whatua kaikaranga.
