2 - Shags / Cormorants

Feb 2014 Challenge - "2"

In NZ we call Cormorants "Shags"
Of the world’s 36 shag species, 12 are found in New Zealand.
Eight of these are endemic – they are found nowhere else.
The remaining four are native to other countries as well as New Zealand.

Oh how fascinating. In Texas, we call cormorants Water Turkeys. We have a few varieties of them, but certainly not 12.

I didn't know the word shag meant also an abandoned and alone cormorant! :-)

Over here in the UK a shag and a cormorant are different species!

Hence the saying " Shag on a Rock " they get both names here too!
