Miniature Praying Mantis

January 2012 Challenge - Patterns and Shapes

This young baby is so cute and his shape is so strange - and he was ready to fight just like his mama does...
Mantodea (or mantises) is an order of insects that contains approximately 2,200 species in 15 families worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats.
A colloquial name for the order is "praying mantis", because of the typical "prayer-like" stance, although "preying mantis" is sometimes used since mantises are predatory.

This is real - and I have a lot of OOF photos to prove it!

I thought you had photoshopped this praying mantis on the bottle because I've never seen such a tiny one before. Are you sure you didn't???
Really cool capture Janice! And yes, they do have the oddest shape! :)

I totally agree with you, they do have the oddest shape, so well camouflaged at times!
