Maungakiekie

Epsom, Auckland

One Tree Hill, Maungakiekie (Mung-ga-kee-kee)
The park's donor, Sir John Logan Campbell, is buried at the summit of One Tree Hill alongside the obelisk you can see here.
Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill is one of the largest Maori fortifications (pa) in New Zealand, covering about 45 hectares.
Tamaki (Auckland) was a popular place for Maori to live with its rich harbours and the fertile soils derived from the volcanic eruptions.
The lava field surrounding One Tree Hill would in the past have been dotted with small settlements of a few houses each, associated with gardens cleared among the rocks.
Little of this evidence now survives around One Tree Hill, but it does survive in other lava fields in Auckland and elsewhere.
