Whakairo

My 27th Face of March

Maori Wood Carvings known as Whakairo in Maori, was brought to New Zealand by the Maori, who settled New Zealand some time prior to 1300 AD.
Maori Arts are the means of recording tribal history, acknowledging the spiritual world and illustrating Whakapapa (genealogy).
Quality carvings pay deep respect to ancestors, history, myths and legends.
This head features traditional Maori carvings and uses paua shell as eyes.
