I had a hunch it was the old Woodward and Lothrup building but couldn't confirm it until I found this:http://klnb.propertycapsule.com/p/retail-real-estate/Washington-DC-20004/1025fstreet -- seems like they added that decoration recently (because it wasn't on old pictures of the building), but that awning was unmistakable to me. Great find and shot, too! V.

This is the former Woodword and Lothdrop Department Store building containing decorative motifs similar to many roman frescos from Ppompeii and Herulaneum1 :)

Not your everyday building the work of art attached to the structure in a flattering way is beautiful.
Bet it is an important structure with history attached to it.
