Identity Revealed

Della was very concerned about what we found at the beach
I showed her it was nothing to be worried about
It was just a Horseshoe Crab with some barnacles on it
Actually this one was missing his tail and was not alive anymore
Horseshoe Crabs are marine arthropods
They are a living fossil
They are the closest living relative
to the now extinct trilobites
Della didn't care about all that
She just thought it looked weird

If you are interested you can see a photo of my older
sister, Scout (RIP) herding some Horseshoe Crabs at this link

So glad the mystery is solved - great alertness on the part of Della and a very scholarly explanation from Professor Fenway!

Nice capture and story, Jane. I love horseshoe crabs because of the living fossil aspect. Very cool.

I imagine the scent got their attention. When I was little, Horsehoe crabs swimming near me scared me skinny.

"What could possibly smell this bad?"
Cool photo.

Because of the barnacles clinging to this horseshoe crab and missing tail, I had no idea what it was!
Very cute shot! V
