Winter Birding in Ontario January 2006

On January 23, 2006, four birders, Bert Filemyr, Karl Lukens, Connie Goldman and I, Jane Henderson, left the Philadelphia area in Bert's van to head for Ontario and do some winter birding. Our first stop was Amherst Island. We went from there to the DuPont hot ponds in Kingston, ON, and then to Algonquin Park and vicinity. On the way home we stopped briefly at Niagara for gulls, and near Rochester, NY to look for the reported Hawk Owl. Our goal was to find as many species as possible during a five-day period (we found 63) and to see as many northern birds (species which we would be unlikely to find near home). Notable sightings included Northern Hawk Owl (near Rochester, NY), Snowy Owl (we found 7 on Amherst Island), Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins (in Orelia, ON), Rough-legged Hawks, Boreal Chickadees and Iceland and Glaucous Gulls.
