On June 15, 2006, Bob and I left from JFK via Heathrow Airport in the UK for an Elderhostel trip to Kenya. We arrived at Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi on the evening of June 16. The tour officially started on June 17. We stayed at the lovely Nairobi Serena Hotel the first night. The trip focused primarily on game drives. However, from Nairobi we visited the house where Karen Blixen aka Isak Dinesen wrote "Out of Africa". We also visited the Rothschild's Giraffe Rehabilitation Center. From Nairobi we traveled, by van and by plane, to Amboseli, where we visited a Maasai village; to Lake Nakuru, where we visited a school and planted some trees, as well as to a center for indigent women; to Sweetwater Tented Camp, where we visited an orphaned black rhino and a chimpanzee enclosure; and to Maasai Mara, our favorite place of them all. We did game drives nearly every day, sometimes two or three in a day. We had picnics which included a hot food buffet and white tablecloths. We saw a total of 33 mammal species and/or subspecies, and over 160 bird species. We got home on June 29. It was a wonderful trip.
