Aloha! Bob and I made a 12-day trip to Kauai in December 2009. We stayed with a couple from Massachusetts (my favorite state) and their daughter in a condo in Poipu on the southeastern coast of the island. We snorkeled; we took a guided tour of the Alakai Swamp, where a few rare and endangered endemic birds can be found; we took two trips to the Kilauea Lighthouse to see Laysan Albatross, Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Red-footed Booby, White-tailed Tropicbird, Great Frigatebird; we took a boat ride along the Na Pali Coast to see Humpback Whales and to enjoy the spectacular scenery. We were surprised by the number of Pacific Golden-Plovers all over the place -- golf courses, parking lots. They make their way to Kauai after breeding in Alaska. We were not prepared to find Red Junglefowl everywhere -- on the beaches, in town -- cock-a-doodle-doo-ing all day, everywhere! Snorkeling was wonderful, and the weather was perfect the entire time. It was a wonderful trip.
