Himeji Castle one of the top four remaining "original" (rather than a modern concrete reconstruction) castles in Japan, it dates back to about 1600AD. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and has been used as location in a number of films including the Bond film "You Only Live Twice" and "The Last Samurai".
Himeji Castle is a short walk from the JR Himeji station which is on the JR Sanyo Main Line and also a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line.
This gallery is a collection of photos from Himeji-jo taken on various visits I've made there. The newest photos are placed at the beginning of this gallery.
UPDATE: *** PLEASE NOTE *** from April 2010 until 2015 Himeji Castle is under wraps (surrounded by scaffolding with a white cover) for restoration work. Until 2015, your best bet to see a real castle in Kansai is the much smaller Hikone-jo in Shiga Prefecture.
