The rod and plate were used to stabilize buildings prior to the ability to otherwise stabilize walls. In the U.S., you see this in the 18th through 19th centuries especially in cities such as NYC, Philadelphia, St. Louis, etc. The rod and plate systems were long used prior to U.S. use in Europe to include cathedrals. this is a simple device to keep the brick facade from bulging. there really in a metal rod running completely thru the building, the star is esstentially a big nut that screws on the end. The other comment about things being time bombs is complete horse hockey

A teacher once told me many of these were removed during the Civil War to make bullets. Ever since I keep an eye out for them.

They pull together walls in buildings that were previously in danger of collapse. They work decent until the rod inside conducts heat, and then it expands and the building is a timebomb waiting to collapse.

The stars are attached to cables that run thru a building at the floor levels. I think that they help stabilize the building and are to help hold a building together in the event of an earthquake.

Does anyone know if these stars mean anything or have significance? I was recently in Alexandria, VA and they were everywhere (and forgot to ask a local).
